Babbling Bubbles

As I said, wedding industry lagi subur-suburnya nih belakangan ini, banyak oknum wedding vendor yang aji mumpung meraup keuntungan di sini.

Tapi memang dasarnya ga jodoh yah.
Saya chat dong minta pricelistnya. Ketika tek tok via whatsapp, bahasa mbaknya manis banget gitu kan.

Dia pesen buat 3 orang!
Masa iya saya kasih extra bed? Mba asistennya nyempil diantara suami istri itu? 😂
Duh Gustiiii.
Yaudah disitu saya terima aja. Wis kadung dibeli juga, ya kan.

Fast forward, beberapa minggu kemudian, saya kasih kabar ke mbaknya kalau saya bakal terbang ke kota tersebut tanggal sekian dan bisa jadi nyolong waktu buat trial makeup, tapi lagi-lagi saya tekankan kalau masih tentative. Dia oke in aja.
H-1 sorenya, saya ngabarin lagi kalau trial makeup positive jadi ya mbak. Apa dong jawabnya?
Hari H trial make up, dia ada acara keluarga—lamaran kalo ga salah—otomatis ga bisa trial makeup.
Emangnya acara lamaran dibikin dadakan H-1 minggu gitu?

Astagaaaa 😭 rasanya pengen kejang-kejang saking emosinya.

Udah saya minta balik tiket keretanya.
Udah cari-cari alternatif MUA lain H-1bulan. Dapet calon penggantinya sih tapi saya ragu hasilnya 😅 haloo pengantin mana yang belum dapet vendor makeup H-1 bulan?
Akhirnya setelah ngobrol sama mbak MUAnya langsung dan menimbang-ninbang saya bakal kehilangan banyak uang karena udah cancel 2 MUA + tiket PP dia (!!!) akhirnya saya tetep pake si mbaknya itu.

Tapi yang bikin gondok ga brenti sampe disitu.

H-1

Di sore hari dia suruh emak untuk cari rangkaian bunga melati (a.k.a tibo dodo) buat dipakai pengantin. Gila gak tuh.

Tapi karena itu udah H-1 dan I’ve already worn out of so much negativity that sucked in, saya pilih diam dan ikhlasin aja.

Ganti dia suruh gown team buat makein.

Karena hasilnya bagus, saya sedikit merasa bersalah pernah drama sama dia. Apalagi drama sama orang hamil.
All in all, even though the vendor could deliver an amusing result, but when its done under poor management and lack of professionalism, I bet someday mereka gak akan kemana.

So here’s moral of the story:

  • What you see (on Instagram) isn't really what you get.
  • Ketika tektok perihal harga dan kontrak, minta dikirim kontrak tertulis format PDF via email supaya jelas. Jangan hanya modal chat via whatsapp doang sama mimin vendornya.
Pastikan perjanjian sampe detil-detilnya. Minta bukti. Screencapture. Kalo ga, si vendor bisa seenaknya sendiri.
  • Sisanya sudah saya tulis di sini yah.

There are so many things I haven’t told about wedding related in this blog yet. I am afraid that the longer I start to write it down, the more likely the details would be forgotten. Because the details matter.

Later, as I scrolled the blog pages, I hope that the wedding posts could tell the untold story behind the happy faces shown on my wedding photo album. Just call it a closure to appreciate the first round of roller coaster ride. Because man, even the starting point to go through marriage itself already felt overwhelming.

So, the first move my husband and I had took for wedding preparation was, trying out pre wedding photo session for fun, at a few blocks away from A’s home, name Jimboeng. We were skeptical about it, since they offer a really good price compare to the other wedding photographers price-list.

I want to spread the news about this hidden gem we found but A tell me not to. He said that some people would miss the point and thought that we brag about the price that did not cost us much, you know. And people see everything in different kind of perspective, like maybe they thought the frames mas Jimboeng took is underrated and so on, so I decided to keep it low key and tell this in here instead.

Obviously, at first we did not expect that much, not until the make up was done, the attire was worn, and the set was ready.
We really were in love with the set which effortlessly pull Javanese ambiance. And they provided props for us to play so we did not pose intense in frame.

Although the photo-shoot package offered three sets and two wardrobes (another one is lurik), we chose only two sets and one wardrobe. And hey, the provide another three sets for modern theme too.

With the result like this, I think it is freaking cheap for Rp 1,5 million. The makeup + hair do, couple’s attire, one huge printed photo, even the set are included. I mean, mostly other photographers only gives some of the results but I got all raw files copied in flash-disk. It is surely a great deal for us💃

This is just me trying to remind myself when I need to look back and reminisce how overwhelming it was to prepare all the wedding stuff, and in the end to appreciate more to every single effort we take to make it happen.

Disclaimer here: this is purely my perspective from what I experienced and I know some people would not agree with my thoughts.

The D-date was already planned and agreed long time ago, one year before the due date.
The naive me once decided that someday I want my wedding reception and all that to be held simply and in a low-cost budget. However, after hopping to one another wedding reception, there was one day that I attended a wedding reception and I could barely park the car because the place seemed to be crowded. There were some people sitting in the stairs entrance, garbage spreading everywhere, even I saw some of them washing their hands not in a proper place plus the spoon was not clean until the point that I could not enjoy the meal. Then I and my friends stopped by a fast food franchise to grab some food on the way home because we were starving.
It was a total mess.

And there was another day when a wedding invitation arrived in my desk and it was all white and I thought further if I was the one who give this invitation to my boss or any colleagues, I do not have the nerve to give it directly to them because it was made recklessly.

I know that soon it will end up in the trashcan but to be honest, for me the invitation must come in a proper shape and design. Because you know, it is implied that your officemates and your boss would think that you are not given a proper salary by giving that white-plain-look-a-like invitation.

And there was any other day that I got some fabrics along with a piece of paper saying ‘would you be my bridesmaid’ kinda thing because it is happening in my country lately. What surprised me was once I received that and saw how the fabrics given were so stiff yet thin and came with the blurr-printing and I bet even you will not wear it in any other occasion ever again. I mean, acara bisa dibilang mewah tapi kasih kain gak gini-gini juga kaliii (udah dikasih tapi tetep grundel ya?)
I may sound too complain-ish and overthinking, but this is what society shaped us.
I realize that the way we see this issue is indeed subjective and I do know it takes a lot of cash to hold a wedding reception which could please everyone. And we could live our life without pleasing everyone right?

Do not get me wrong, I also prepared a budget wedding reception too. A wedding for me is like a party with me as a host. If you do not like my party, I don't care. You're not the one who fund this party financially so you don't have the right to say anything about my event.

I have got some inspirations from some people who prepare the wedding in a budget, but they still manage to celebrate the beginning of their new life with relatives and colleagues in a ‘proper way’.
The meaning of the proper in here is to appreciate the guests effort to come, to give handshake and congratulate you two directly, with a big smile on their face. Not by holding a luxury one, but by choosing to eliminate the inconvenience the guests would get during the wedding. There is a thin line between each other but do you get the point?

Moreover, if you choose them to be your bridesmaid and groomsmen, the game is going stronger. Remember how they come across another island just to attend your wedding party. Remember how they intentionally go to a tailor nearby to turn the fabrics you gave into something good to wear in your wedding day. If you provide them with accommodation, transportation, even tailor bills, that would be VERY great. But it is a rare case in my circle of friendship.
And try to picture your friends wearing those clothes again, in another events. Will they be able to re-use it again?

Because maybe some of your friends will be glad if you do not give them the bridesmaid fabrics because they prefer to wear their own dress in order to show their own style.
A low cost budget is not an excuse for the bride and the groom to hold an unproper wedding reception because there are some space for the creativity to play in it.

P.S.: Bumped into this draft I saved for a long time and I decided to post it now.

I and my partner agreed that our wedding theme should be simple and timeless. Meaning that when we look up into our wedding photobook ten years later, we will not regret the choice we have made to refuse the following trend in 2018 because eventually the ‘it’ thing in 2018 could turn out to be something out of style in 2030. We do not want it too experimental in both of our wedding reception. Of course, we still have to explore the options provided.

The reception in my soon-to-be-husband surely follows the Solo tradition. Sanggul, paes, complete with tibo dodo, cunduk menthul and classic black velvet javanese dress, are some of the things I would wear on our special day, called Solo putri. The whole theme is just like how Pak Jokowi (currently president) held his son’s wedding, even the groom and the family’s attire would be pretty much the same. Everyone would be dressed up in black, combine with batik for the bottom, sanggul for the woman and blangkon as a head cover for the man. Looks so regal and classic at the same time.

On the other hand, in order to look totally different from bf’s party, I explore another theme that is completely contrast to Jawa Klasik. I brought the idea of classic yet modern vibes to differ mine from his and no traditional procession followed. Since Batik would be everywhere in his, I decided to not have my family and relatives dress up in batik.

Instead, I bought them fabrics in songket motive, matching with this wedding dress:

Aaaand yes, I decided to rent my wedding gown instead of having someone make it. Even though a wedding comes once in a life time, I do not want a wedding gown sit on my closet for a life time too. In addition, I could not afford a designer to make an alluring gown and random tailor won't give the alluring result either.
Back to the dress, you might find it pretty familiar with the design and cutting, for it has songket application on the chest and the back. I fell in love the first time I wear it although I could barely move with this dress 🙃
I was wondering whether this wedding dress is timeless enough--I mean, the color, the cutting, the songket application on the back. It was noted that this kind of dress would be so much easier to walk in with the help of petticoat worn beneath it. I concern that puffy dresses have their own cycle or my body will not look good in that. Besides, I could not help but thinking about this one big frame neglected on the corner in the room back in hometown. It was my sister’s pre-wedding photo wearing puffy dress with bling bling embellishment and everytime I look at it, it seemed so old and somehow odd.
I realise that there are some factors that tell in what year exactly the wedding pictures come from, because admit it, trend is evolving right?
Later I made up my mind by deciding to rock something more basic and classic.
Needless to say, in less than D-2month I tend to screw pretty much the whole plan, change the dress into a new, completely different kind.

Til the next post.

There is no doubt that there will be obstacles along the way in planning the wedding. I will guarantee that no matter how hard you plan your wedding, there is always certain percent that your plan goes the wrong way.
In my case, chaos came from make up options. I guess for Indonesian brides nowadays, we take make up really serious. Wedding makeup always be on the top of the list after catering and venue. Just blame all the beauty vloggers on youtube and instagram 😛
First thing, I put disclaimer here:
I do not have the intention to make the vendor’s reputation bad or something, but I am here want to review my experience and just not into the result. Nonetheless, her hands made other brides look beautiful and flawless, even my senior who have used her service told me that her work is beyond her expectation. This post is fully based on my personal preference as a client, and if whoever read this is not in the same boat with me, that is totally fine. I am not an expert in this anyway 🙈
I think a soft, natural glow with a pinky blush suits best for bridal makeup.

I mean, I want this kind of bridal makeup.
Pic taken from @lawralovefaith

However, I did not get that for my prewedding session.

Soo I have been eyeing this MUA. Her studio is in Yogyakarta but she welcome job from clients from other city, even she ever flew to Sulawesi to make up her bride.

She got several jobs in my hometown too, meaning that she must be already familiar with this town.
Her work is well known for the long lasting and long wearing makeup. When nowadays the brows are statement, she could draw it naturally without making it too thick.
The price is moderate, not too cheap nor too expensive; and not like any other make up vendor who give additional fee for clients from other city, she take charge for accomodation and transportation only.
And what makes her look more convincing is, she often got a job from medical faculty graduates. Oh well, is that even relatable? This might sound ridiculous, but in Surabaya, the medical faculty graduates always choose the best MUA and the best kebaya for their graduation ceremony. Knowing that she is noticeable among the priyayi class, I decided to hire her as my prewedding and wedding MUA.

Although I found out later that her name was not on my photographer’s MUA partner list, I still wanted her to make up my pre-wedding session. Considered that as a makeup trial, I agreed on paying the excess because of using a non-partner MUA.

Then the day has come.

The second best MUA in Yogyakarta (confirmed by her hair stylist) is not exaggerating though. She did a great job for my eyebrow. I love the way she overdrew my thin lips.

But contrast from what I want, the result looks matte and heavy, far from terms 'natural and glowing'.
She had me wear stila lipstick in pink but then she topped it with nyx matte lip cream in shade london for finishing. In result, my lips’ colour got darker and darker over time.
No highlighter on my face and the worst part, the contouring was just off.
Perhaps that combination made my mom said that I looked several years older. At first I got offended but when I scrolled over my prewedding photos, I could not agree more with her.

I already had communicated what kind of look I want to be (dewy and stuff) but I think it is just her style that is different from what I want. I scrolled over her portfolio on Instagram and turned out that some of her round and square shaped face clients ended up just like me, looking freaking older than her real age. But she did real fine with her clients with normal shaped face.

In a photo (not uploaded here of course) edited by photographer, I figure out that my lips are black.

Meanwhile, in between our conversation during makeup, she told me that she never took any makeup class before. She learnt all that by herself. And I was like ‘whaaaaaat?’
I mean, she comes in a high rate and she never took any professional makeup classes?
Insane.

I am a believer when it comes to a career, we have to be certified by taking certain professional classes in order to master its sector. It is like WMI for investments or CPA for accounting.
Later I found out from my junior in high school (who used to be her client) that she regretted for hiring her. My junior have a round chubby face--just like me, and she told me that she is satisfied enough with the akad make up, but she dislike the reception makeup. In my own observation, she looked older because she retouched her lips with brown-ish lipstick and blush.
I mean, who in the earth want brown lips for their wedding? okay maybe some, but it IS a bridal makeup and you know that you are forbidden to do experiment with  your bride. For me, brown or purple lipstick is a big NO for a wedding. Even if you come as a guest at that moment.
After a few chit chats, we agreed that her work made us look older. She encouraged me to hire another vendor and let go the DP I have paid for the wedding because you know, marriage (expect to be) happened once in a life time and you do not want to look older in your wedding photos.

Finally 5 months before the due date I cut her off without a doubt 😅

I know that I could not compare wedding makeup to prewedding makeup. Since I got proofs from comparing her works to some photos of people that I secretly follow on instagram to actually see their bare face, I determined to do so without telling her the truth--the bitter truth that I was not sure about her work anymore. Blame that javanese blood.

Yet, this story will not finish here. I got a lot of to tell soon about my wedding makeup and the drama that follows.

PS: Her makeup technique is getting much better these days so no need to worry if I wanna use her service again. But remind me that I have to reserve long day before because as I mentioned above, she is one of the best MUA in town.

In this social media era, especially on instagram and pinterest, wedding ceremony could be looked more appealing than in reality. Fabricated in the form of photos beautifully captured by professional photographers and packed with a good preparation, there is no surprise that it look mesmerizing and alluring until the point that some people get inspired by it, including me. Of course, this phenomenon impact wedding business too. Over-glorified by all the glitters presented on social media, there will be some opportunists that take it for granted. So you should be more selective in hiring wedding vendors.

There is another challenge when it comes to prepare your wedding. You have to be balance between the needs vs what-you-want-your-wedding-to-be vs what your-family-want-your-wedding-to-be 😂. Besides all the drama that might follows, you have to be careful in choosing the right vendors to bring out your concept and everything in your mind to reality and suits your character well. Equally important, choosing the right vendors might save you some bucks to splurge on after married life, tell ya later. As for me, it could be more challenging because my hometown happened to be in a suburban with limited lists of credible vendors.
Speaking of it, wedding vendors might be tricky in a way you could not imagine. So here the tips to find the professional wedding vendor for your special day (in general):

1
Define a concept that you want. Whether you want your makeup to be matte or dewy finish, bold or soft makeup, traditional or modern look, what kind of tradition you have to follow (we have Javanese or Sundanese here for example), garden party or hall, flowy or gown dress,on a strict budget or all you can-afford type, you decide. Knowing your priority is very important at the first place since it can make you more focus in filtering the vendor lists. I don't do photography but all brides face these options :

Do you want your wedding photos be touched by this tone ..

or this tone?

2.
Do a deep research.
Observe the local vendor first.
If there is no any particular vendor you would like to work with, you can consider the sister city tenants like, if I am gonna hold wedding party in Solo, I will consider vendors from Yogya. But this decision has consequences too. You have to consider the additional costs : two ways airplane/train tickets, their transportation from their home to the airport,  the accommodation, and sometimes they give additional charge for clients from other city.

3.
Reviews from your friend is important. You do not get enough information from the internet, except the vendor is already famous so there will be local wedding forums mention their name.
Becareful with wedding vendors that presented in one group owned by a wedding organizer. Once again, do a deep research. So I have been through this: once in a while I talked to local wedding photographer and he offered his WO service providing the decor, special effects and stuff by giving example of party they had organized. Luckily he mentioned my friends name as his client. It will not take time to confirm it to that-not-so-close-friend and turn out she just used only his photographer service, she took decor service etc to other people and not him. Later I found out that this wedding organizer, led by him, did fraud here and there.*

4.
Survey the price list and read the terms and conditions carefully. Do not hesitate to ask the very specific details you nee to know until you get a clear view about the whole thing related to the contract.
One thing for sure there are too many wedding vendors who do not have the intention to run the business professionally. I do not think they see this business as a sustainable income for the future because most of them make the contract carelessly and in some cases, they could be as deceiving as abang bajaj. Yea, that is the exact term to describe what I am feeling while facing these people. At first you hail bajaj and he come close to you. You mention the place you are going to go without bidding the price, then you will be surprised once you arrive to your destination—The bajaj bill can be twice higher than you take taxi ride. If you do not make the contract crystal clear upfront, wait until they change it on their own selfishly in the end. I learnt that the hard way* The most simple prove is, there were only 2 from many of my vendors who give invoice and receipt (proof of payment) to me. How come they do not give a single receipt while you pour their bank account with million rupiah ?!

5.
After you get the price list here and there, make a list. Define which vendor with more reasonable price and better output, which one that have best reviews based on internet and testimonials from your relatives—which one you would like to work with. In addition, assess their attitude in handling customer (which is you I am talking about) using your own instinct. But most importantly, adjust all of that to your existing budget.

6.
Do not in a rush in hiring vendors. Even though the clock is ticking and you better deal the vendor as early as possible because you do not want to lose it to someone else, make sure you get enough supporting data.  Please do think three, four times if it is necessary since mostly once you pay the down payment you can not take it back if you change your mind.

7.
Finally, you can choose the best one 

I know sometimes this wedding thingy could be overwhelming. One thing to keep in mind is that there will be many obstacles along the way and the outcome won’t be exactly like you want it to be.  It feels like the universe is against you. But all you need to do is to chill. Remember, there is always a plan B (until Z) to everything. Regardless your wedding went perfectly or not, the fact that you finally tied the knot to your spouse and he vowed to love you for the rest of his life are the true essential of the wedding itself.
